Staff Picks No. 103

Steve Burns ALIVE : Steve Burns
La Mama
July 23rd-25th 2025

There are not many performances, so GET YOUR TICKETS NOW. And please someone go on my behalf. I was in high school when he started on Blues Clues… too old to be in the target audience, but like many of my peers, sorta really into what Steve was bringing. And I am still sorta really into what he is bringing nowadays, nearly 30 years later.

Staffer: Theresa Buchheister

Desert Island : Scenes : Angelina Hoffman
Pageant
July 10th and 11th 2025

SOS, these days, is right. I am so deeply into this.

: Ann Marie Dorr, William Burke, Leonie Bell, Megan Lang

Brick Aux
June 26th-28th 2025

If you know any of these artists, you already have a ticket. If you don’t, let me tell you, each of them create the most tenderly absurd, strangely intimate and silly-or-sexy-or-stupid (depending) performance events in NY. This is a work-in-progress. But if you are like me, you like to see something in various stages of evolution because in there somewhere is the truth.

It is also closing night of Lavanda Collective’s gallery show at Brick Aux on the 27th! Go for both!

Staffer : Theresa Buchheister

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA : Julia Masli
The Public
June 25th-29th 2025

I really don't want to tell you about this show because it's best enjoyed as a surprise. I will say two things: don't sit on an aisle if you don't want to talk, and get ready to have your heart opened by the magic of community and theater. This is a must-see, please catch HA HA HA HA HA HA HA while it's still in New York City.

Staffer: Noa Rui-Piin Weiss

Out of Order : Carl Holder, Skylar Fox, Most Unwanted Productions (Connor Scully)
East Village Basement
June 27th-July 22nd 2025

I love a game of chance and what feels like the rise of game-as-theatre, game-theatre, what have you - and there’s something about palpable, ridiculous risk in intimate spaces that seems right up these ol’ alleys. Carl Holder presents a bowl of index cards and upon each is a challenge to complete, lest he quits theater forever. And directed by Skylar Fox, probably the ideal person to helm deeply controlled chaos (bias alert, friend, but also great director for something of this calibre)!

Staffer: Reuven Glezer
